In Literacy and Learning at TWU, we offer programs in early childhood education, multicultural and multilingual studies, reading education and early literacy intervention.
Ultimately, our coursework focuses on supporting children, adolescents and adults in homes, schools and communities.

At TWU, there are multiple ways you can develop as a teaching professional. We offer a bachelor's degree as well as graduate and doctoral programs to advance teachers’ expertise. You can become a certified K-12 reading specialist, master reading teacher or earn certificates in a number of content areas.
In Literacy and Learning, we focus on socially and culturally responsive education. With an innovative spirit and through reflective practice we create responsive programs and partnerships with schools and communities. We transform teaching and learning toward greater equity for people who have been marginalized.
Our faculty brings specialized expertise in:
- Early childhood education, including growth and development of the whole child in varied social contexts.
- Early, adolescent, and adult literacy including diverse linguistic, cultural, and social literacy practices ranging across ages and contexts.
- Reading and early childhood leadership in a variety of community-based and educational settings.

Literacy and Learning Programs
Enjoy our brand new Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. In just 120 coursework hours, you can earn your degree to start impacting children's education in prekindergarten through third grade.

At the doctoral level, you can pursue a PhD in Reading Education. Another option is the PhD in Child Development and Early Education out of the Department of Human Development, Family Studies and Counseling.
Learn moreA certificate may be the opportunity that makes sense for you to advance your expertise as a teacher. You can become a certified K-12 reading specialist with the Texas All-Level (K-12) Reading Specialist Certificate or a master reading teacher with training from Reading Recovery.

- Leadership and Advocacy in Early Childhood Education
Texas Woman's University has been a leader in providing Reading Recovery training to teachers and administrators to help struggling students in their school districts.
TWU's Reading Recovery training center is one of only 18 in the United States, one of two that trains faculty, and the only one in the world that offers training in Spanish (Descubriendo la Lectura).
